  44.  The first key for changing to a highlighted directory is the default; the
  45.  alternate call be substituted on the Configuration "Option Switches" screen.

  47.  The Directory-Change key presents an input field in which a drive and/or
  48.  directory may be typed.  A history list of these entries is maintained,
  49.  accessible from newest to oldest with the UpArrow key or the reverse with
  50.  DownArrow.

  52.  4FILES can be configured to use directory changing utilities such as LCD, ACD
  53.  and NCD.  This allows making a directory change by specifying only a fragment
  54.  of the new path name.  From the configuration menu, select "Utility Ports" to
  55.  configure 4FILES to find the utility on your system.

  101.      To view a file, type <Grey +> or <Enter>, depending on the keyboard
  102.      type selected from the Configuration "Option Switches" menu.  <Grey+> is
  103.      the default.  Two Utility Ports are mapped to this key; the one which is
  104.      called depends on whether or not the file is an archive.  Ctrl-<Grey +>
  105.      or Ctrl-<Enter> calls alternate archive browser.
  106.  
  107.      Utility Ports must be properly configured so that the appropriate utility
  108.      can be found and executed.

  121.     Typing Alt-<char> will seek the next record starting with that character.
  122.     The search direction can be reversed with <Scl-Lock> or, if the PC keyboard
  123.     type has been configured, "5" on the keypad.

  134.     Selecting one of these functions (except attributes and delete) presents
  135.     a target filename input field and in some cases a target path input field.
  136.     These fields are initially blank, ready for new input.  Pressing the
  137.     DownArrow key in a filename field will put the current filename in the
  138.     field.  Subsequent DownArrows will access the history list from oldest
  139.     to newest.  UpArrow browses the list in the opposite direction.
  140.  
  141.     Separate history lists are maintained for target filenames for:  rename,
  142.     copy/move, and archive.  A list is also maintained for target path.
  143.  
  144.     The "Ctrl-Z" and "Z" archiving functions can produce .ZIP, .ARJ or .LZH
  145.     archives.  See "Using Input Fields" (below) for more information.

  148. 9.  File-Mode only:  DISPLAYING FILE ATTRIBUTES
  149.  
  150.     The limitations of an 80-character screen prevent displaying both file
  151.     creation time and file attributes at the same time.  To toggle what is
  152.     shown use Shift-NumLock (except on laptop computers) or F7.
  153.

  155. 10. File-Mode only:  DIRECTORY MANAGEMENT
  156.  
  157.      Type "N" to create a new directory or "K" to kill the highlighted
  158.      directory.  For the later, the directory must be empty.
  159.  
  160.      Type "S" to Sort the directory listing.  Several sort methods and either
  161.      ascending or descending sort order may be selected.  Tapping twice on any
  162.      key, or pressing <Enter> will invoke the selection.  Only files orders are
  163.      sorted, except with "unsorted" which puts all entries in DOS order.  The
  164.      sort field is highlighted.  There is no highlight for "alphabetical," and
  165.      the filename field is highlighted for "unsorted."

  168. 11.  File-Mode only:  PROGRAM EXECUTION & DATA FILE LOADING
  169.  
  170.      F9 or Ctrl-X will cause the current file to be executed immediately if
  171.      it is a program or batch file.
  172.  
  173.      If the file is a data file with an "executable extension," it will be
  174.      loaded into the program mapped to that extension.  An executable extension
  175.      may be setup with an environment expression like this, entered from the
  176.      command line or via a batch file: SET .DOC=C:\WP\WP.EXE.  Pressing F9 on a
  177.      .DOC file would then cause an immediate execution of Word Perfect with the
  178.      file opened for editing.

  181. 12.  File-Mode only:  SHELLING TO DOS or SHOWING THE 4DOS HISTORY LIST.
  182.  
  183.       Ctrl-E presents an input field loaded with the current filename.  This may
  184.       be executed as-is (although this takes more keystrokes than F9) or may
  185.       be edited.   Two taps of Ctrl-E presents a blank input field.  Executing
  186.       the blank line will give you the true DOS (or 4DOS) command prompt.  If
  187.       instead you enter an executable command, program name or alias, it will
  188.       be immediately executed (you will never see the DOS prompt).  A history
  189.       list of commands issued from the Ctrl-E input field is maintained.

  191.       ^H will immediately shell to DOS and display the 4DOS Command History
  192.       List.  Your COMSPEC variable must be set to 4DOS.

  195. 13.  Note-Mode only:  TEXT CUT/COPY AND PASTE
  196.  
  197.      See the Function-Key table above of keys.  Highlight the desired text
  198.      and press <Enter>, or <ESC> to cancel.  The various F9 keys will either
  199.      cut or copy text to a buffer.  F10 will paste the text at the cursor.

  201.      <^INS>       These three keys cut and paste text as they do in Windows ...
  202.      <$INS>       ... and are in addition to the preferred use of the F9 ...
  203.      <$DEL>       ... and F10 keys.

  206. 14.  Note-Mode only:  FLUSH-RIGHT TEXT ENTRY
  207.  
  208.      Cursor to right of all text:  Shift-RightArrow allows text to be entered
  209.      to the left of the cursor.  The cursor is placed at the right margin.
  210.      Flags show space available for entry.  Shift-BackSpace is a destructive
  211.      "forespace" key in this mode.  Quit this text mode with <Enter>, <ESC>
  212.      or Shift-LeftArrow.

  214.      Cursor amid text:  Text at the cursor and to its right is bumped to the
  215.      right margin.

  218. 15.  Note-Mode & Input Fields only:  DELETING TEXT
  219.  
  220.       An entire note or input field may be deleted with Ctrl-Y.  Alt-Ctrl-Y
  221.       will delete from and including the cursor position to the right.  When
  222.       not in File Mode, Ctrl-H is a destructive backspace.

  226. 16. USING INPUT FIELDS
  227.  
  228.     History Lists have been decscribed in several places above.  History lists
  229.     have room for 10 entries each, and the oldest will scroll off.  Some lists
  230.     have permanent, non-scrollable templates at the top of the list.  These
  231.     are the 'current filename' for target filename fields and '.zip', '.arj',
  232.     and '.lzh' for the create archive-filename field.  For filename input
  233.     fields, the current filename is at the top of the list; accessed with the
  234.     down arrow key from a blank field.
  235.  
  236.     All cursor and edit keys which work in file notes work in input fields.
